Vice President

Professor Roey Sweet

Roey Sweet is Professor of Urban History at the Centre for Urban History at the University of Leicester, focusing upon eighteenth-century urban, social and cultural history. Much of her work has concentrated upon antiquarianism and the reception of the past in Britain and by Britons travelling in Europe.

Her monograph Cities and the Grand Tour: the British in Italy, c.1690-1820 (2012) focused upon the response of British travellers to the classical and medieval past in Italian towns and cities. She is currently leading a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust ‘War, travel and cultural exchange: William Gell and the British in Italy, 1750-1830’, with a particular focus upon Sir William Gell whose manuscript journal of his tours in Spain and Portugal is held by the British School in Rome.
